Congratulations to the Fluvanna County High School Class of 2019 Early College Scholars

PRESS RELEASE – May 24, 2019

The following students completed the Governor’s Early College Scholars Agreement which required students to earn an Advanced Studies Diploma, graduate with a 3.0 or higher grade point average, and earn 15 transferrable college credits. Transferrable college credits are earned by taking dual enrollment classes or earning a score of 3 or higher on Advanced Placement (AP) Testing. These students have a minimum of 15 transferrable college credits, at this time. In July, when results of the Spring 2019 AP Testing are received, this list of students may increase.

Fluvanna County High School is pleased to announce recipients of the Paul W. Bragg Scholarship. Established by Mr. Bragg’s will, and managed by the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation, the scholarship is meant, “to provide undergraduate college assistance based on both need and merit to graduates of Fluvanna County High School.”

RICHMOND, Va. — Teams of educators from 31 school divisions gathered last week (March 11-12) at the Chesterfield Career and Technical Center to share ideas on how to accelerate innovation and promote deeper learning in the commonwealth’s public schools. The educators make up the first cohort of the Virginia is for Learners Innovation Network, an initiative of the Virginia Department of Education, James Madison University and the Virginia School Consortium for Learning.

The innovation network’s goals are to promote deeper learning at all grade levels and to align instruction and assessment across the state with the expectations of the Profile of a Virginia Graduate. The profile — which was adopted by the state Board of Education in November 2016 — describes the knowledge, skills, attributes and experiences identified by the board, higher education and employers as critical for future success.

Fluvanna County Public Schools is one of more than 3,500 communities working to re-imagine the purpose of education

The week of April 15, 2019, Fluvanna County Public Schools will take part in Most Likely to Succeed’s worldwide campaign to re-imagine education. The acclaimed film, Most Likely to Succeed, offers an inspiring look at what students and teachers are capable of—if we have the vision and courage to transform our schools. Directed by acclaimed documentarian Greg Whiteley, the film has been an official selection of two dozen of the world’s top film festivals, including Sundance, Tribeca, and AFI DOCS. It’s been featured at leading conferences on education, including ASU/GSV, SxSWedu, Harvard/ GoldmanSachs, and NewSchools Venture Fund. Audience members call it the most compelling film ever done on the topic of school. In the past year, more than 3,500 communities have booked a screening of Most Likely to Succeed.

SOCIAL STUDIES TEXTBOOKS AVAILABLE FOR REVIEW

At its regular meeting on Wednesday, April 10, the Fluvanna County School Board will consider adoption of the textbook committee’s recommendation for textbooks for social studies.

The recommended textbooks and instructional materials will be on public display at the School Board Office weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. from March 14, 2019 through April 9, 2019. Questions about the evaluation and adoption process should be directed to Brenda Gilliam at bgilliam@mail.fluco.org or (434) 589-8208.

The public is invited to make public comment to the School Board about the adoption at its April 10 meeting.

FLUVANNA COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS APPOINTS NEW STAFF

At a scheduled Fluvanna County School Board Meeting on Wednesday, February 13th, 2019, the Fluvanna County School Board unanimously approved the appointment of Ms. Valarie Marsh as the new FCPS Transportation Supervisor. The division organized a school-based panel of team leaders, received multiple applications and conducted several interviews before selecting Ms. Marsh.

60,000 Elementary Students Ready for Virginia Reads One Book 2019

Fluvanna County elementary schools are excited to participate this year in the Virginia Reads One Book program. West Central Primary, Central Elementary and Carysbrook Elementary are among 143 Virginia elementary schools and their families who are all set to read the same book together in March. “We’re excited that in this second year of Virginia Reads One Book the number of participating students has grown from 40,000 to 60,000 students,” says Read to Them Executive Director John Dwyer.

FLUVANNA COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS ANNUAL GEOGRAPHY BEE RESULTS

The month of January, our students were buzzing with excitement with the annual National Geographic Bee competition.

The National Geographic Bee competition, which is now in its 31st year, was held in grades fourth through eighth to determine each school champion. School champions then took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society, to determine eligibility to participate in the State Geographic Bee. The following students were named school champions for Fluvanna County Public Schools: Carysbrook 1st Place – 4th grade student Zander Childers, Fluvanna Middle School 1st Place – 5th grade student Andrew Jamison, and Fluvanna County High School 1st place – Autumn Moore.
